My Mom's Pink Depression Glass for Mothers Day

Mothers Day tablescape 2012 001

I couldn't miss out on Cuisine Kathleen's theme of honoring our Mother's this week at her "Lets Dish" gathering. (Especially since it was MY idea! LOL)
Nothing like a good party to bring one out of the doldrums, huh?

The early morning light is coming into the dining room, where the table is all set with my Mom's PINK depression glass for our family's brunch after 9 am Sunday Mass on Mothers Day.
I'd much rather have my family come home to eat with us here, than be out in the maddening crowds at all the restaurants on this holiday.

I remember my Mom using these pretty PINK dishes to serve ice cream & cake for every birthday celebration when we were growing up. She had blue ones, too, that my youngest sister inherited.

By the way, she is making good progress in dealing with the loss of her husband & she & I both say "thank you" for all the wonderful & sympathetic comments last month. It helped us both a great deal to know that even people we've never met, shared her sense of loss & wanted to comfort her.

For Sunday's brunch, I'll be using a "make ahead" recipe for Belgium waffles that is WONDERFUL! Very flaky & light!
It has a yeast batter that you mix all together the night before serving & let it bubble & rise overnight. I have a flip-type waffle maker that I just & this makes it very easy to feed a crowd.
I'll post it on Friday so you can make it, too, if you'd like!

I found this set of pink & cream quilted placemats with the pretty scalloped edges at Old Time Pottery. I that place!
The dinner & bread plates are Lenox Eternal china.

The centerpiece of flowers, which, forgive me, I'm STILL working on, will go in this cream & gold compote.
It coordinates nicely with the Lenox & I have a few other gold trimmed cream items on the table to repeat the effect.

A little tealight candle holder from a friend, (who used to host "Partylite" parties) as well as matching faux teapot with the same battery operated tealight inside.

I prefer not to use open flames when the grandchildren are visiting. My Mom lit
her dress on fire while playing with matches when she was little.
Luckily, a neighbor saw what was happening & came to her rescue, rolling her on
the ground to put out the fire. She had a horrible scar beneath her one arm & she
instilled a strong & healthy fear of open flames in all 8 of her children!

The Arcoroc French Rosaline Durand pink swirl wine glasses will hold orange juice. I've seen them on Ebay, touted as "Depression Glass" but I know they are not, as I remember buying them sometime in the late 70's.

I love the reticulated edges on these two serving platters. There is also a similar edge on a big, round bowl. I think they resemble lace, don't you?
The open scalloped edges on the two serving platters that I have, as well as a big round bowl are of the Old Colony pattern, sometimes referred to as "Lace Edge" or "Open Lace". These were made by the Hocking Glass Co. from 1935 to 1938. They can range from $7 apiece for the divided platters that I have to upwards of $700 for a frosted vase in this pattern!
A great source for information about Depression Glass is the book titled "Collector's Encyclopedia of Depression Glass" by Cathy & Gene Florence.

I've used my Mom's flatware, the Wm. Rogers Oneida silverplate; pattern called "Always", made in 1958.

I thought the little floral motifs went well with the flowers in the placemats & upcoming centerpiece.

This little dish will hold rainbow sprinkles for Ms. C. to use atop her whip cream covered waffles.

The little compotes will be perfect for a mixed fruit cup of strawberries, fresh mint, grapes, blackberries & raspberries along with a splash of sweet orange juice & a dollop of whipped cream.

Here is a good view of the textured trellis pattern on them. I have learned they are the Normandy pattern, sometimes called "Bouquet & Lattice". It was made by the Federal Glass Co. from 1933-1940.

I'm experimenting with some flowers from the garden. Obviously, I need to go buy some baby's breath filler, but I think these might work well for Sunday morning.

I love how you can see the tiny veins in each petal.
Nurses like *easy-to-see* veins!!! LOL

I hope to get around to visit all you wonderful people who have left such touching comments recently. The death of my brother-in-law made it all the more apparent that I have a very limited time left to spend with my sweet husband. So I've been trying to be with him more & not spent as much time on the computer, lately.

I wish all of you a very Blessed & Happy Mothers Day!

  1. Rett, this is all gorgeous! Your mom's dishes make me smile. Having these little treasures that were enjoyed by our moms is truly special. Thanks for sharing this beautiful table setting. I agree! Our time is precious. We need to spend it with the ones we love while we still have them in our lives.
Wishing you a very Happy Mother's Day! ~ Sarah

  2. Forgot to say, loving your header photo. No more hyacinths available here. I did have some bloom in the garden this year. It was a sweet surprise.

  4. Hi Rett
I like your pink-themed Mother's Day table, you have so many pieces of the pink depression glass. I have one - the same pickle dish you'll be putting sprinkles in. It came from an antique store and was just the size I wanted for condiments.
The pink bouquet is pretty, light and airy looking.
Wishing you a Happy Mother's Day.

  5. What a pretty table to honour your mother!
You're so right - we don't know what the future holds, so spending time with the ones we love is paramount! Like you, I'd much rather enjoy breakfast on Mother's Day at my own table with the ones I love, than in a crowd.

  7. Dear Rett, this table is very beautiful, I have a soft spot for pink Depression glass and would love to own some one day. (I would also need to be living in a larger home.) I also love the last photo, the statue and the lily of the valley is perfect. Looking forward to the waffles. Happy Mother's Day. xo

  9. Rett, I loved getting an up-close view of your pretty pink Depression glass from your mother's collection! I may have to start collecting some! I especially love the little compotes and the dish you've designated for rainbow sprinkles! Thanks for inspiring this week's Let's Dish theme. I have so enjoyed visiting everyone's table honoring mothers!

  10. A magnificent collection of pink Depression Glass...I've been tempted many times, but I need to be better educated prior to jumping into the pool. Your garden flowers are so beautiful. What are they? Wonder if they would flourish here on the prairie. One of my favorite scriptures is somewhere in Psalms (can't remember the chapter & verse right now...brain freeze)..."My days were numbered in the Book of Life before the beginning of time, and nothing that comes against me will in any way effect the number of those days. ". It's always made me cognizant of the importance of time spent with loved ones whether young or old, and it's such a source of encouragement for me. Thanks for inviting us for a peak. Cherry Kay

  12. Your table is lovely Rett, and such a sweet reminder of your mom. And I am super jealous of your lily of the valley! Being born in May and living in the northern midwest, I associate my birthday with lilacs and lily of the valley. Unfortunately I can't have them in TX:-(
I, too, while loving the blog land and bloggy friends, have stepped back a bit to enjoy the people living right here with me! Can't do it all!
Happy Mother's Day to you ~

  13. Rett, I was so glad to see your name and know that you had joined us back in Blog Land. I know that it's been such a painful time for you and the whole family, especially your sister.

I love the table, and you had me at pink depression glass. I have ZERO of it, and I love it so. I always look at it in the antique malls and want to buy it, but I never take the plunge.
It's just perfect for your table, and I definitely think those flowers were meant to compliment it!

(That's awful about the fire and your mom. It must have left scars in more ways that one!)

Hope this coming weekend brings your family some much deserved joy.

  14. You have such fun depression glass pieces. I "inherited" quite a bit from my aunt - it was my grandmother's, but I had to buy it which seemed funny because no one else had to buy their nice pieces. I am glad I have it though as I remember it at my aunt's house. The goblets go perfectly with the depression ware. My father would never let us have candles burning in the house as his sister had gone in a closet and lit a fire and that really affected him. So glad your mom was OK on that one. Have a wonderful Mother's Day.

  20. Hi Rett, I've missed you and have been wondering how your sweet sister was doing. Thank you for letting us know that she is doing well and coping as best she can. I'm sure having the loving support of her siblings has helped. On a lighter note, your tablescape with your Mom's pretty depression glass is wonderful. May you have a happy and blessed Mother's Day! xoxo

  22. Hi, Rett. I have so much to tell you, I hope I don't forget. First and foremost, my condolences on your BIL's passing; I had not read about that (I was out of the loop for a few weeks with our new grandbaby), but had missed you so (that's my second important point--that I've missed you). About the table...it is just lovely. You and I "talked" about your pink Depression glass--I'm so happy to see it. And I have the Lenox Eternal and that sweet little dish for Ms. C's sprinkles! Your flowers are PERFECT! I wish you a happy mother's day--I agree with you--I'd MUCH rather be at home with my family than out at a restaurant, ANY day! Please pass my condolences to your sister as well. ~Zuni

  23. Love your mom's collection of pink depression glass Rett. I started collected just a few pieces a couple of years ago, your collection is beautiful as is your table. I think your flower selection will be perfect for a special spring holiday. I'm with you on going out on Mother's Day, its just not worth the hassle, at least where we live.

I know that your sister is comforted greatly by your presents in her life as she grieves the loss of her husband. Blessing to all of you on this Mother's Day weekend.

  26. Such a beautiful table! I'm partial to it because I have my grandmother's pink depression glass. It seems to be more of a dessert set with lots of interesting serving pieces. I wonder if the dinner plates were broken. I did find some dinner plates, as you did your goblets at a store back in the 80s and often use them as well. Thanks for the memories and happy mother's day1

  38. Hi Rhett....
I was making my Ramen Noodle Spaghetti Dish tonight and went back to the post and was reading all the comments again. I see that you made this for your daughter. Did they like it or was it a bust? How about you. Did you and your husband like it? If you did or didn't PLEASE let me know or if you would do something different to it. I appreciate your comments and your input. I made it again tonight and only had jalepeno jack cheese and cheddar and used those and also drained canned mushrooms. In a pinch it was an easy dish to do. I also had grandkids over again.

Also I want you to know that I'm so sorry to hear of your Brother in laws death and I am so very aware that we do only have so much time on this earth. My husband has Stage 4 Bone Cancer (his second time around...first time was a very rare form of lung cancer...he does not smoke). He has really changed his diet and its keeping him alive and well. He just gets really tired. His oncologist is so pleased that he is still doing so well. Tomrrow we're leaving on a cruise to Alaska. It is something he has always wanted to do so we made a bucket list and well we decided to do it now while he can.

Also I want you to know that I think your mothers day table is beautiful and so very memorable. Your whole post brought tears to my eyes. And you still have your cute sense of humor in being a nurse and liking the 'veins' in the flowers. That brought a smile to my face.
Thanks Rhett for your blog friendship. It's gals like you who make it all worthwhile.

    Warmly,

    Nann

  39. Rett, just stopping by to check in. It was fun to see all your mother's pink glass again. I think I told you once that one of my nieces has her MIL's sets of Depression Glass. Her husband's mother passed away when he was a teenager, but his dad kept his mom's things packed up and saved them for his son's future wife. Isn't that the sweetest thing. Samantha loves vintage things so she was thrilled with this amazing gift. Hope you are well. I think of you often. Drop me a note when you have time. ~ Sarah

  49. Hi Rett

Thank you so much for checking in on me after Hurricane Sandy! We were so very fortunate to escape without damage. So many of my friends were not as lucky and we've been helping out in a relief effort to assist them. I saw Kathleen posted this week, so thankfully she is also OK!

    I am so sorry to hear so belatedly of the passing or your brother-in-law. I fully understand why you are taking a blog break. You have your priorities right, Rett! {{Hugs}}

  50. Rett, this is such a lovely table and tribulte to your mother. I loved hearing all about the dishes.

I am out of the loop, but I was so sorry to read about your little sister's loss. Please know I am thinking of her and you and have said a prayer that your hearts will be healed. I am so missing my sweet Adleaide, my BFF who died, and I know what it is to miss friends and family gone on before. But a husband would be extra tought. Sending you warm and tender hugs across the miles...
